Tropical System Isaias
Isaias will potentially bring localized flooding and gusty winds this weekend. Some communities could see isolated to scattered flash floods Saturday and into Sunday. The greatest rainfall is forecast across portions of the mountains and along the coast over the weekend. This system may also bring isolated strong to severe thunderstorms as it progresses across the state with the greatest threat on Sunday.
Periods of moderate to heavy rain are expected for much of the state Saturday into Sunday as tropical moisture associated with Hurricane Isaias moves through the region. Areas across the southern mountains and the Blue Ridge Escarpment, as well as portions of the coast are likely to see the heaviest rainfall. Gusty conditions will also be possible over the weekend with the strongest winds across higher elevations in the mountains.
High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories have been issued for much of western North Carolina, beginning at midnight tonight through 8AM Sunday. Strong winds and elevated tides over the weekend may lead to higher-than-normal water levels for coastal regions and combined with heavy rainfall, may increase the risk of minor coastal flooding. Dangerous rip currents and large waves are also possible along the coast.
Please be sure to have multiple methods of receiving weather alerts over the weekend, especially overnight as heavy rainfall and isolated severe weather could impact communities Saturday overnight. Residents and visitors can get the latest updates by monitoring local news for the latest advisories from the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center (NHC), as well as state and local emergency management officials.
